Proverbs 10

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother. Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death.

The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.

The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot. The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin. The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out. He who winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.

Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs.

Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment. Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor. The wages of the righteous bring them life, but the income of the wicked brings them punishment.

He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment. The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom. What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted.

When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever.

As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him. The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing. The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil. The righteous will never be uprooted but the wicked will not remain in the land.

The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out. The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.

Let’s both act like children and see who wins

Stumbling across an interesting article about a boy who forgot his lunch made me contemplate the school’s role in this situation. The boy’s mother wanted to “teach him a lesson” and let him go hungry for lunch. So, the mother denies son lunch but the school gives him one anyways. What would you (as the school) do in this situation?

Censoring your world

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

Today, I challenge you to learn something new about a topic that of which you have only heard one side. It can be trivial or profound- doesn’t matter. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well as think.” This reminds me that the process for building character never reaches a plataue but rather climbs or falls based on our personal discipline. When you cease to expose yourself to new ideas or even new facts, you stunt yourself. This unintentionally self-censoring shows a lack of curiousity. The lack of curiousity is a sign that a person is disinterested in growing. When you’re not growing, you are dying.

Learn something new today.

The obesity obsession

Author: Dani  //  Category: on the tube

We’ve officially polarized the discussion on weight in adolescents as far as the public agenda is concerned. How dare we be either 10 pounds over or underweight? It is a sure sign of a disorder or disease… right? Not the first article about this by any means, http://www.thatsfit.com/2010/02/01/parents-dont-think-overweight-kids-are-fat/?icid=main|main|dl3|link7|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thatsfit.com%2F2010%2F02%2F01%2Fparents-dont-think-overweight-kids-are-fat%2F

First it’s “talk to you kids/parents” about eating too much. Then, it’s “Watch what you eat” to make sure you’re not anorexic. Next, it becomes “Why is our nation so obsessed with food?”.

Surviving from 11-17 is an accomplishment enough and that’s beside the whole… testing the water s element. If you can make it through without ever imbibing, sexing, stabbing or slurring… your parents have been taking decent care of you. If you make it and actually have true friends, siblings, a mentor or two and a healthy relationship with at least one of your parents/guardians… you are way ahead of the pack. If you know who you are and what God wants you to do with your life with self esteem and not a lick of cockiness, then you are superbly ready to fly the coup. If you struggled a little with your weight  between those years, that story is boring. Sure, if it caused health problems (or if it was caused by a health problem) and resulted in bullying, it is somewhat traumatic.

(I have a hint for you though,  they would have picked on you for something else anyways.)

That’s the point I’m making here… your body is in flux. Most people cannot be recognized when compared to their 8th grade graduation photo, and that’s ok.

The important thing is to be healthy, happy and help others.

That’s not how the saying goes

Author: Dani  //  Category: angst or tea

I’ve never agreed with the saying, Garbage in —Garbage out. I’ll give it points for simple cleverness but that doesn’t mean we have to agree with it. The concept has been applied to healthy eating, drug abuse and even study habits. Sometimes, it is Christian-ized to mean that when you think sinful things it makes you a sinful person. Figs don’t come from thorny trees.. etc. Then I saw a frivolous article that made me think slightly frivolous things. They have decided (somewhat officially) which states produce the most beautiful people. Most beautiful by state: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2010-02-01/the-most-and-least-attractive-states/

Do you think maybe….this is more of a chicken/egg scenario?

Couldn’t it be that not that many people from Tennessee or north Dakota care to go into modeling or movies and thus, beautiful people do not flock there to reproduce. There seems to be some sort of cycle here. Not sure what it is but I wouldn’t discuss in mixed company. By mixed I mean with people whose state is ranked low on the list.
