on youth

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young. Henry Ford

Maybe since we’re young we can sit back and appreciate oldness. First, we will scold the elderly for not appreciating what they have. Limitless time to nap and remember is combined with the ability to only recall the things that bring you joy. Then we will brag about how good they have it in comparision to our own woes. afterwards will we not so subtly remind them that they owe us for the care and housing we provide both through our tax dollars and personal contributions.

Tables turned? It’s not as cute the other way around is it?

How Did I Get Here?

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

The Bible is comprised of 66 books; 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. It was written over a span of between 1,500 and 2,000 years by approximately 40 authors.

In our first lesson, we established that the Bible has been proven reliable through archeological, historical and prophetical evidence and is, therefore, worthy of our utmost attention and devotion. Because it has been proven to be 100% accurate in its historical references, we will now take a look at what it has to say about the history of the world and mankind.

Sometime, we don’t know when, God decided to create the heavens (atmosphere) and the earth. The earth had no form to it – just a mass of mud and water waiting to be shaped by God. Then, God set His creation plan in action.

Read Genesis 1:1-2:3

The Days of Creation

Ø  Day 1 – God created light (Genesis 1:3-5)

Ø  Day 2 – God created sky (Genesis 1:6-8)

Ø  Day 3 – God created dry ground and vegetation (Genesis 1:9-13)

Ø  Day 4 – God created the sun, moon and stars (Genesis 1:14-19)

Ø  Day 5 – God created sea life and birds (Genesis 1:20-23)

Ø  Day 6 – God created wild animals, domestic animals, and one man, Adam (Genesis 1:24-31)

Ø  Day 7 – God rested (Genesis 2:1-3)

What questions does the account of creation raise in your mind? Is there anything about the account of creation that strengthens your faith in the Bible?

Why, since the earliest historical records, has a week always been seven days long?

What We Believe About the Bible

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

We believe that God, who is Himself Truth and speaks truth only, has inspired Holy Scripture in order thereby to reveal Himself to lost mankind through Jesus Christ as Creator and Lord, Redeemer and Judge. Holy Scripture is God’s witness to Himself.

Holy Scripture, being God’s own Word, written by men prepared and superintended by His Spirit, is of infallible divine authority in all matters upon which it touches: it is to be believed, as God’s instruction, in all that it affirms; obeyed, as God’s command, in all that it requires; embraced, as God’s pledge, in all that it promises.

The Holy Spirit, Scripture’s divine Author, both authenticates it to us by His inward witness and opens our minds to understand its meaning.

Being wholly and verbally God-given, Scripture, in the original manuscripts, is without error or fault in all its teaching, no less in what it states about God’s acts of creation, about the events of world history, and about its own literary origins under God, than in its witness to God’s saving grace in individual lives.

Kind of hard to say outloud.

Is the Bible Reliable?

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

The only evidence that we have so far that the Bible is the Word of God is its own proclamations. For many it is enough to have faith in the Bible’s claims, but it doesn’t have to be. Next we will establish that the Bible is reliable based upon other factors.

Archeological Evidence

Although archeology alone cannot prove that the Bible is true, it could prove that the Bible is false – and it has certainly tried. Yet, with all of the attempts over the years to discredit the Bible, archeologists and scientists have not been able to. There are still some accounts in the Bible that have not been supported by archeological evidence but where evidence exists, it is accurate and true. Following are some examples:

Support #1
Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke and Acts, has been proven accurate by archaeology in regard to references to 32 countries, 54 cities, and 9 islands…that’s 95 different references, all of which have been supported by archaeology.

Support #2

John, the author of the Gospel of John, 1-3 John, and Revelation, mentions in his gospel that near the Pool of Bethesda there were 5 porches. For years, archaeologists believed John to be wrong because no such place had ever been discovered. But recently, 40 feet under ground, 5 porches were discovered.

Support #3

In the 19th century most “modern” archeologists agreed that, even though the Bible mentioned a group of people called the Hittites (Genesis 23:10), there was no such group. Then, in the late 1800’s, tremendous discoveries matched the Biblical record with incredible precision.

Support #4

For years it was assumed by some theologians that Moses could not have been the author of the Pentateuch (Books of Law) because the written record was not in practice at that time or was used sparingly. This led theologians to devise many theories as to how the Pentateuch was compiled. Then, archeologists discovered the Black Stele containing the laws of Hammurabi which date at least 300 years before the time of Moses.

Support #5
There are 25,000 sites with a connection to the Old Testament that have been located in the lands of the Bible.

Support #6
The most ancient textual evidence we have is a portion of the Gospel of John, written on ancient paper called papyrus, dated just after 100AD. No other ancient document enjoys such compelling manuscript evidence.

Historical/Manuscript Evidence

In addition to overwhelming archeological evidence, there is also much historical manuscript evidence in support of the Bible’s reliability.

As with all ancient historical documents, the original writings no longer exist. During the period that the Bible was penned, a piece of writing was passed along on animal skins or papyrus. What exists of those copies is referred to as manuscript evidence, or ancient copies. We have over 24,000 ancient copies of the New Testament alone, more than any other ancient writing. In case you are wondering whether that is considered a lot, compare that to some authors whose works are never questioned to be accuarately preserved:

As you can see, for these secular manuscripts the shortest time span between the author’s life and the earliest copy is 800 years. The Bible, on the other hand, is much closer. Of the 24,000 copies we have of the New Testament, 230 of them date before 600AD, a difference of only 550 years. And some of the copies date much closer. In the last 20 years or so, study has been done on a portion of Matthew’s gospel that some people believe is either an original or was written while Matthew was still alive.  There is most definitely a piece of a copy of the gospel of John that dates to 125 A.D., perhaps as soon as 35 years from John’s life.

Prophetic Evidence

If the combination of archeological and historical manuscript evidence is not enough to convince us that the Bible is true, the most compelling evidence is fulfilled prophecy. There are hundreds of prophecies that were made and fulfilled in the Bible. Here are a few about Jesus:

Prophecy                                                                                             Written                                Fulfilled

His birthplace will be Bethlehem                                               Micah 5:2             Matthew 2:1

He will be born of a virgin                                                             Isaiah 7:14           Matthew 1:18

He will come into Jerusalem on a young donkey                                Zechariah 9:9     John 12:14

His close friend will betray Him                                                  Psalm 41:9           Mark 14:10

His hands and feet will be pierced                                            Psalm 22:16        John 20:27

He will rise from the dead                                                            Psalm 16:10        Acts 3:15

He will ascend into heaven                                                          Psalm 68:18        Acts 1:9

There are many prophecies in the Bible that have yet to be fulfilled, including those outlining the end of the world and the fate of mankind.

How much evidence do you need to conclude that the Bible is a book that is worthy of your utmost attention and devotion?

Did you realize that there is enough credible evidence to “convict” Jesus as being the Son of God and the Bible as being God’s Word in a court of law?

When you’re packing for college next semester, please ensure that you have one set of boring business clothes. This may seem unessesary, but I assure you, you will need it more than you realize. Even if you think, “I’m a Phys Ed major” or “I’m not studying business”, that doesn’t mean you won’t need one set of shirt/tie/dressshoes before  you graduate. It doesn’t matter what you are studying or what school you go to. You will need to give at least one speech, attend one meeting or sit for one interview before you get that cushy, perfect job where you expect to dress however you want. Every college and highschool is filled with people who insist that they way they dress doesn’t matter. This is true, if, by chance you happen to not only be the most connected, talented person in your field. Even so, you will find that the other connected, talented people in your field will not be impressed by your  alternative haircut (that everyone your age has) or your wacky shoes (that you can barely walk in because they’re so ridiculous).

Then, the next time you are in a situation where you might want to avoid condescending glares you will be relieved to have that boring, interview outfit in the back of your closet.

What advice have you been given when packing for college?

do more— buy less

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

Buying gadgets and doodads means you spend time maintaining and cleaning them. Every now and again this pops into my head when I view a standard, minimalist space from one of those overcrowded regions in china. Families will live in 10’x10’ houses and they keep things so neat and tidy. Then, I visit the home of an American family with their 4000 square foot home packed from edge to edge including a garage that they cannot use.  I then consider the time cost of maintaining all of these belonging. The big fancy yard requires a lawnmower which requires maintainence and storage. The game system (forever needing upgrading) has wires and boxes stretching from wall to wall. Article:http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/03/business/economy/03experience.html?th&emc=th

I have decided that I want to do more and buy less. I don’t want to tug along all these extraneous toys for the rest of my life… and that’s when people start to complain that they are bored.

So, we have to think of other things to do that don’t require lots of stuff.

What do you like to do that doesn’t require stuff?

What is the Bible Anyway?

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

Before we embark on a study of the Bible we must first establish what the Bible is. There is probably not a person, living or dead, who would disagree with the fact that the Bible is one of the most remarkable works of literature ever written. But, does a book deserve our utmost attention and devotion just because it is well-written? What is the difference between the Bible and the stacks upon stacks of other books written over the centuries?

The answer to those questions is found within the Book itself.
