When we learn the subjects of psychology, science, math, engish, religion and physilosophy, they are divided into neat little classes. Obviously when learning, this is an organized logical approach. As a student approaches upper-level studies in a particular field they may study hybridized topics such as “Communication psychology” or “physical education and business” .  however, certain topics are sometimes viewed as unmixable by the masses. Science and religions, language and math, or psychology and faith, are viewed as unreconsilable. Which mixed topics do you find interesting? Are there any topics that you think have absolutely no place in a christian’s life?

Day 6: Romans 6

Author: Verdi  //  Category: Coffeehouse

Romans 6:1-2  1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

If God forgives every sin that we commit, does that give us  license to sin? No! As Christians, we are to be dead to our sins. We are to sin no more. Now, we are going to sin and we are going to do it everyday. We are going to struggle with sins and some are going to be a life long battle. It is when we let them win or we give up when we are in the wrong. The passage above tells us we need to have a change of heart. If our heart is with God, then we are in the right place. It is when we feel that we can do anything because God will forgive us that is wrong.

Day 5: Romans 5

Author: Verdi  //  Category: Coffeehouse

Romans 5:6-8 6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

How do you know that someone loves you? Is it because someone tells you they love you or is it through their actions? People can say that they love someone all they want, but if their actions do not show it, then they probably don’t love you.

We know how much God loves his people. He showed it when He sent His one and only Son into the world to die for His people. Now that’s love! God sacrificed His Son for us, even though we do not deserve it. We are sinners and God is perfect. God cannot be around us for our sin prevents it. But He loved us enough to make away for us to come to Him. He gave us He Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus took our place and took the wrath that we deserve and gave us His righteousness. Now all we need to do is believe and that righteousness is ours (Romans 10:9). Now that is Love!

Day 4: Romans 4

Author: Verdi  //  Category: Coffeehouse

Romans 4:4-5 4Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. 5However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness.

Abraham was the subject of this chapter. He was the father of man nations and a friend of God. Not because he deserved it or worked for it, but because he had faith in what God told him. He was considered righteous before God because of his faith, not his works.

The same goes for us. We can not work our way into the good graces of God. Like we said yesterday, God is perfect and cannot be around sinners like his. There is not way to work your way into heaven. It is only through faith In Christ.

Day 3: Romans 3

Author: Verdi  //  Category: Coffeehouse

Romans 3:23-25 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished—

Missing the mark is something that we do everyday. We know that we are not perfect. Well, we can same the same spiritually. The passage above tells us that we all have sinned and fallen should of what God has demanded of us. Because of this, we are eternally separated from God. There is nothing we can do about. There is no way to out weigh the good with the bad for God demands perfection.

Well, praise God that the passage does not end there. We can be redeemed from our sins! It is through Jesus Christ, and him only. God sent His one and one son into the world to take our place. Lived a perfect life and died for our sins on the Cross. Then, three days later, he rose from the grave, conquering sin and death for us. All we have to do is believe and what Christ did for us, and we are saved from our sins and will spend an eternity with God!

Day 2: Romans 2

Author: Verdi  //  Category: Coffeehouse

Romans 2:1 1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

Romans 2 can be a convicting chapter to read. Right out of the gate, Paul talks to us about judging others. The passage above shows us that we have no right to judge because we are no better. God is to be the judge. We know that we are not suppose to judge other, yet we still do. Why is that? Could it be pride? Maybe coveting someone’s status in life? It could be a number of things.

This is something that we need work on. As we continue with our reading, we are going to see that it is through Jesus that we can be freed from this and all of our sins.

Thoughts on Proverbs 14

Author: Dani  //  Category: Life

The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

Remember that friend of yours who was always picking on you for doing what was right? They said, “Don’t plan for your future, just live for today. Nothing matters except for having fun.” One day, when you’re older you’re going to see their face pop up on Facebook. And you will wonder if they are as happy as you. You won’t know for sure until you get to heaven but this line is to remind you that it really doesn’t matter.

He whose walk is upright fears the LORD, but he whose ways are devious despises him. A fool’s talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them. Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest. A truthful witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies. The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning. Stay away from a foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips.

So, that person you always compare yourself to – the one we were talking about before. They don’t really matter in the end. At the end of the day, you are responsible for what you do. If they do stupid, irresponsible things they will learn the consequences. No one can be a bad influence on you unless you let them. Be aware. You owe it to yourself to make smart choices.

The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception. Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright.

Which is why you shouldn’t let those people get under your skin. Sure, you’d like to see them fail. Sure, life is extremely unfair or capricious at times. Sure, you wish divine justice played out on earth every single time.

Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy. The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end in grief. The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways, and the good man rewarded for his. A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps. A wise man fears the LORD and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless.  A quick-tempered man does foolish things, and a crafty man is hated. The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.

I hope you notice that it doesn’t say, “The wise man makes sure everyone knows he is wise”. It’s more organic than that. the wise man is wise and he can sleep at night because he knows he did what he was supposed to do. That is the real blessing.

Evil men will bow down in the presence of the good, and the wicked at the gates of the righteous. The poor are shunned even by their neighbors, but the rich have many friends. He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy.

Everyone around you is going to be petty. Even spiritual leaders, like teachers, deacons, elders and pastors are going  to do petty things. They are going to fight over silliness. They are going to belittle and hurt you but, that’s not the point. Is it?

Do not those who plot evil go astray? But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness. All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

What is the point? You may question, when you consider the unfairness of life.

The wealth of the wise is their crown, but the folly of fools yields folly. A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful. He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. A large population is a king’s glory, but without subjects a prince is ruined. A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly. A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones. He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

When you consider the unfairness of life, there it is.

When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous have a refuge. Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning and even among fools she lets herself be known. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people. A king delights in a wise servant, but a shameful servant incurs his wrath.

Proverbs 1:21-23 (New International Version)

21 at the head of the noisy streets [a] she cries out,
in the gateways of the city she makes her speech:

22 “How long will you simple ones [b] love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
       and fools hate knowledge?

23 If you had responded to my rebuke,
I would have poured out my heart to you
and made my thoughts known to you.
